2010 SCCGE Summer Scholarship

The South Carolina Consortium for Gifted Education established the Melba McKenzie Summer Scholarship program for Gifted Education as a tribute to the spirit and perseverance of Melba McKenzie, a former officer of the SCCGE Board of Directors from Hampton School District 2. In the spring of 2006, the SCCGE Board voted to name the arts scholarships award under the auspices of this program after LeAnn Crosby, a long-time advocate for gifted students in Colleton County and South Carolina and also a former member of the SCCGE Board.

These scholarships, in an amount not to exceed $750, cover or partially cover tuition for low SES academically or artistically gifted students at the middle school level to attend a summer program. There is an application process open to all teachers of gifted students and guidance counselors in the state. This process includes:

- Summer Scholarship Application

- Interest Survey

- Letter of support from a teacher, counselor, or principal explaining why this student deserves a scholarship

- Artistic applicants must also submit photographs or slides of at least three (3) examples of work. If music is the area, submit a tape; if dance, submit either videotape or two (2) letters from qualified dance teachers.

The parent and student must sign the application form, indicating their intent to use the scholarship if awarded. Responsibility for selection of a summer program rests with the parent, student and district. If a student receives one of these scholarships, we request that the GT Coordinator for the school district forward the name of summer program selected and registration information about the program to Joy Gray, SCCGE Treasurer, at jgray@sc.rr.com.

If you would like to nominate a student, please send the nomination information to your District GT Coordinator by February 15. The SCCGE Awards Committee will consider recommendations from each GT Region.

Gifted Education Leadership Institute

The College of Charleston has been awarded funding for a 2010 Gifted Education Leadership Institute. The Institute brings together 10-15 established and up-and-coming leaders in the field to read, discuss, debate, reflect and create during an intense five days during the last week in June - June 21-25, 2010.

Held at the beautiful College of Charleston campus, participants explore leadership and advocacy for gifted and talented children and youth. The group spends time building understanding of the big picture from the state and district perspectives. They learn about the nuts and bolts of program planning and development, delving into everything from planning a scope and sequence for curriculum, developing effective communication with various stakeholders, to hiring and budgeting. The Institute combines theory and research with practical applications. A number of GT Coordinators representing different SC school districts engage participants in hands-on learning.

The SC Department of Education's grant funding allows participants to earn three hours of graduate credit and pays for all of the Institute materials. Designed for GT Coordinators and teacher leaders, interested persons should apply for a spot in this Institute. To apply, you must have endorsement in gifted education.

Persons interested in participating in the Gifted Education Leadership Institute are invited to submit an application. The Institute will be facilitated by Julie Dingle Swanson, Ed. D., with guest speakers from the SC Department of Education and various school districts. To apply, submit the following three items:

1. Letter of interest to participate
2. Letter of recommendation from your school district, and
3. One page essay addressing what you perceive to be your needs, and the goals you have as a result of your needs.

Complete packets should be sent electronically to Julie D. Swanson at swansonj@cofc.edu before the deadline of March 15, 2010. Packets will be reviewed to determine eligibility for the Institute and those selected will be notified by April 1.

Important Information about the Annual SCCGE Conference
It is with a great deal of regret that the Board of Directors has made the decision that the Consortium will not be able to sponsor our annual professional development conference this year. What has been an outstanding tradition that South Carolina educators anticipate each year, will not take place during the 2009-2010 school year. With districts having to limit travel, even to essential meetings, as well as anticipated furloughs and other financial cuts, it was not economically feasible to host a conference.

However, SCCGE is happy to announce that we are now making plans to resume our annual tradition with a 2010 conference in Charleston at the Charleston Place hotel, November 29 - December 1. We will post details here when they are available.
