Gifted Education Leadership Institute
The College of Charleston has been awarded funding for a 2010 Gifted Education Leadership Institute. The Institute brings together 10-15 established and up-and-coming leaders in the field to read, discuss, debate, reflect and create during an intense five days during the last week in June - June 21-25, 2010.
Held at the beautiful College of Charleston campus, participants explore leadership and advocacy for gifted and talented children and youth. The group spends time building understanding of the big picture from the state and district perspectives. They learn about the nuts and bolts of program planning and development, delving into everything from planning a scope and sequence for curriculum, developing effective communication with various stakeholders, to hiring and budgeting. The Institute combines theory and research with practical applications. A number of GT Coordinators representing different SC school districts engage participants in hands-on learning.
The SC Department of Education's grant funding allows participants to earn three hours of graduate credit and pays for all of the Institute materials. Designed for GT Coordinators and teacher leaders, interested persons should apply for a spot in this Institute. To apply, you must have endorsement in gifted education.
Persons interested in participating in the Gifted Education Leadership Institute are invited to submit an application. The Institute will be facilitated by Julie Dingle Swanson, Ed. D., with guest speakers from the SC Department of Education and various school districts. To apply, submit the following three items:
1. Letter of interest to participate 2. Letter of recommendation from your school district, and 3. One page essay addressing what you perceive to be your needs, and the goals you have as a result of your needs.
Complete packets should be sent electronically to Julie D. Swanson at swansonj@cofc.edu before the deadline of March 15, 2010. Packets will be reviewed to determine eligibility for the Institute and those selected will be notified by April 1.
